Hello peeps!
TGIF!!!!I am soooooooooooooooooooo glad this week is over! It has been nonstop for the last month or so with work being extremely busy and so many things I have going on. Let me take a moment to tell you about some really good things going on with me, so I can focus on positive things verses complaining about how my week has been going.
Since I have been away a bit, I have joined a writing group that focuses on improving my writing skills and getting my work reviewed by others who are are in the same field. Let me just say how much of a joy it is and I am getting such good feedback and suggestions from everyone and the bonus is that it is teaching me all kinds of new things I never knew about different styles of writing and about different poetry forms.
I have literally been a writing fool with every spare moment I have. I have entered nine writing contests just in this past week and it is challenging to be given a prompt about a subject and then to create a story with it. But I LOVE it! It is extremely fun and I am having a blast doing it. This is truly one of the places where my passions are. I can definately see me doing this full time eventually and that is my hope for the future.
I wanted to share a fun little story I wrote for a contest that is a twist on fairy tales. The contest was called "Once Upon a Parody" and you had to create a short story less than 1000 words with a popular fairy tale. My entry was called "Little Red Riding in the Hood"
I hope you enjoy it.----((((Friday questions will follow!))))
"Little Red Riding in the Hood"
So far it had not been a good day for Little Red. She had stained her favorite red cape with spilt coffee this morning. She had burnt a batch of cookies she had been baking for her grandmother and a friend and now this. She was officially lost.
Little Red knew she was in trouble the moment she made the left turn about a half mile back. Could it get any worse? Apparently so, now she was stuck in traffic as well. Up ahead, she could see the traffic slowing down as something was holding them up.
She was in an unfamiliar ratty neighborhood and now she was going to be late for sure for lunch at the castle. She had planned to lunch with her good friend, Beauty, who had recently got hitched to a handsome lad named Charming.
Looking ahead, she could make out a figure round and plump going up to each vehicle. She wished she could just turn around and head back the way she came, however it was too late for that. She had no way out, except to go forward with all the other cars on the little one lane road.
Slowly she crept forward and she noticed as she got closer the figure was a stout looking pig with raggedy jeans, worn down so low it nearly showed his piggy tail. She saw two more pigs on the side of the road sitting by a stack of bricks and one that was holding a sign about straw. They all had on dark sunglasses and baseball caps worn backwards.
As she approached them, she rolled her window down nervously in hopes she could just ask how to get out of here.
“Excuse me…can you help me?” she leaned forward to speak to the oddly dressed figure.
The first pig strode over to her car and gave a low whistle as he was checking her out. He raised his shades off his eyes to get a better look at the beautiful young woman.
“Yo Mama, I might be able to help you, if you are willing to help out a Brotha.” he smirked.
“I was hoping you could give me directions” she said timidly.
“I will if you buy some of my sticks. I got some good quality stuff, Red” he smiled slyly.
The other two pigs came strolling over to her car.
“Don’t listen to him, Red. He will lead you down the wrong road and besides, my straw stacks are better than his sticks and you can get more for your dollar.” The second pig said.
The third pig chimed in not to be outdone by his scheming comrades.
“My bricks are the best of all Red, and I will put my stuff up against what they are trying to hawk any day.” He said as he edged closer to her car trying to get a better look at her in the process.
“Are you boys up to no good?” they all heard a deep smooth voice say.
Startled, the three pigs turned sharply and saw it was Wolfy, the town sheriff, busting their chops again. He got out of the police cruiser and strode over to the trio.
“How many times do I have to tell you not to be huffing and puffing on this street? You are holding up traffic and bothering this pretty little lady here.” Wolfy said.
“We’re going.” The first pig said reluctantly as he started packing up his load of sticks. The dang wolf was always breathing down their neck and running them off. At least it didn’t seem like he was going to throw them in jail this time.
Wolfy enjoyed any chance he got to torment the Porker Brothers. He knew they realized he would always have the upper hand no matter how much they tried to outwit him.
Little Red watched with relief as the pigs cleared out in a hurry. She gave a shy smile to the sheriff as he turned all of his attention to her.
“I seem to be lost” she said. She explained how she was on her way to the castle for lunch with a friend and made a wrong turn.
“Not to worry Miss Red, you can follow me and I will lead you on the right path.” He said with a grin pulling out all of his charms to impress the unsuspecting young woman.
“Well here, at least let me at least repay you for your kindness,” she said. She grabbed the basket of baked goodies she had on the seat beside her, and handed it out the window to him.
“Thank you,” he said taking the basket. “They smell simply divine. Now if you’ll just follow me, I know a shortcut and you’ll be there in no time.” he crooned.
She didn’t see his wicked smile as he made his way back to his cruiser. If she had, she would have never followed him, because her day was about to get much worse.
