I wanted to share some of poetry and artwork with you. This is one of my favorite Native American poems that I wrote several years ago. I thought this particular piece of my artwork went well with it too. The painting is called "Native Warrior Woman"
Enjoy!

The Circle
Drumbeats steady
like the thunder on a storm raged sky,
pounding a fierce crescendo, then slow
to the steady rhythm of my soul,
connecting the beat
to my pulse, my breath, my heart...
The vision appears;
Native voices loud and strong
lifting towards the heavens,
singing their songs, their chants, their prayers,
to the Great Spirit,
honoring Mother Earth and Father Sky.
Wise elder women dancing,
shawls swaying, eyes closed,
lost in the rhythm of the dance...
Closing the circle around the pulsing drum
Native men, young and old
adorned with feathers and beaded buckskin
bare flesh painted with brilliant colors
come alive in the firelight's glow.
Lifting hands, shaking rattles,
voices carried high into the mountains,
their feet stomping, pounding, dancing,
connecting to the center of the earth
and to all that is living
as they circle the drum...
A celebration of the Dance of Life
of the drumbeat that echos in the hearts
of all living creatures great and small.
Faster and faster the beat of the drum
pounds it's steady hypnotic rhythm
as it dances to the fire's flames
in perfect harmony.
My heartbeat connects to the pulse
and the drum and I become one...
I am a part of the circle
and the drum is within me
in my heart and in my soul.
I open my eyes and return
to the greater Circle of Life
and thank the Great Spirit
above for the gift of my vision...
The drumbeat lives within me.
