Route 66 ....Part 1
The downpour of rain made it difficult to see the road ahead of her. It had started to descend in the last half hour and had progressively gotten worse as the minutes ticked by. The clackety clack of the wipers did a piss poor job of clearing away the torrent floods on her windshield, only to be pelted again milliseconds later by the driving rains.
She glanced down at the neon digital clock and was surprised to see it was nearly three am. She’d been on the road for fourteen hours, only stopping to use the bathroom and stretch her legs for a moment or two before heading back out on 66 again. She was used to it though, being on the road, day and night. It was her livelihood for the past two years.
Somehow it seemed easier being on the road constantly, anything was better than staying in the house that she and Kay had shared, the house where all the memories lived. But Kay was long gone now and although BJ’s heart still ached and yearned for her, it was for the best. BJ had sold the house and everything in it and had walked away.
Hurt and alone, she made a decision. She went and got her CDL and Commercial license and bought a brand spanking new Peterbilt Class 8 fire-engine red truck with an Ultra sleeper in the cab. With one sharp looking rig, she set out on the highway, just like the song-“Born to Be Wild” Well, not so much wild anymore, at least not since her younger rebellious years. BJ liked traveling to new places and being the king of the road so to say.
She took jobs as she wanted- it wasn’t about the money, she had plenty of that. She’d pick up a load, drive for days and then drop off the load, collect her money and if she liked the scenery she’d hang around for a week or two before moving on. BJ had come to love the life she had. It worked so far, so for her it was easy to continue along the winding road. It helped her to forget what she had lost; at least that’s what she told herself.
All she needed was her rig and her music. BJ usually had her tunes blaring in the CD changer, but with the rains being as heavy as they were, she wanted it quiet so she could direct all her attention to the road. She passed a highway billboard sign that advertised a Greasy Spoon that was open 24/7 just ahead, and she felt the rumblings and growls deep within her flat well toned tummy.
Chow sounded good, especially since she hadn’t eaten anything in about eight hours. Sometimes the time just flew by as quickly as each passing mile. Well, at least if she stopped and fueled up both herself and the truck, then maybe the rains would let up some.
The night air was hotter than a witch’s tit as she pulled off the next exit and parked the truck in one of the many empty spots reserved for eighteen wheelers. Only two other rigs were parked nearby and the operators were probably inside the cabs catching some shuteye. BJ jumped down from her cab and sprinted across the parking lot to the brightly lit diner. Her faded Old Navy tee-shirt was soaked and clinging to her firm body by the time she opened the door and stepped inside.

Yesterday was full of torrent rains and bad weather.. I left for work yesterday as my front yard was being flooded. I had to drive through what seemed a river crossing my driveway to get out... We have over an acre and in the front we have a culvert that splits up the front yard into two large sections. The culvert allows the water and rains to flow through and it helps to drain the farmer's field across the street, but when the rains come down too fast it can't take all the water through the pipes fast enough so it tends to overflow into the yard. Yesterday it was overflowing and about halfway up to the house and I was worried that I would have problems or that my sump pump would not hold up with all the continuious pumping...
I love the sound of rain and thunderstorms, but Geesh! I think we had enough yesterday. Then yesterday afternoon my manager at work let us all go home early just because we've been working really hard and she's great that way. So I get home and thankfully the waters had receeded and no damage was done... so I go to pull the truck into the garage and the door opener won't work. Shit! What the fuck is the problem... I think the battery died in the opener so I park the truck in the driveway and go inside to get a new battery. Lovey is home and asleep on the couch- Damn! I woke her and scared her half to death cause I'm home early- she thinks it's a stranger trying to get in... She tells me we don't have any power and haven't since she got home. Well crap! Here I am thinking we will have an early dinner and get some others things done but no...... Can't cook anything and the sky is still dark and gray so it makes it dark and gloomy inside with no lights... so we light candles and wait. I tried to read the newspaper but it was too dark. She went back to sleep cause she wasn't feeling good anyway- trying to come down with a bugga boo. So I sit in the candlelight twiddling my thumbs.
Well, I ended up getting one of our flashlight lanterns that we have and reading a book for a while- (Janet Evanovich-Four To Score)it was something quiet to do while Lovey slept.. So about three hours later- the electricity finally kicks back on. Yay!! So I am starving and I start some dinner. I turn the TV on and find out we have tornados in the area- Oh great! Just what we need... So after dinner, we kept the tv on to keep an eye out for warnings in the area in case we needed to take cover and my doll started watching the Country Music Awards show. Since I am not into country music, I decided to go in the bedroom and write for a while.
I started a new story last night - I've worked on longer works of fiction and currently have two in process but I've never written short stories before... I thought I'd try my hand at it. Anyway... I will post it on here once I'm done fleshing it out.
The tornados held off this time and I am glad- I love thunderstorms and lightening but I hate tornados because of the damage they can do. Was caught out in one once in the 70's and it wasn't fun.
Well, so far no rain this morning but the winds are strong and high... But I have no doubt that today will be a better day!

I wanted to write about music this morning because I have been listening to some beautiful music. Alot of people like music and I suppose some like it more than others. For me, I like music that connects to my soul. It's not just about listening to something and singing along or just to have something to do. Music to me is something I do for my spirit. I like music that has the ability to transcend me to another place. I like for it to reach in and wrap its-self around my heart and my mind. I want to feel the music... I know, I know... you're thinking- Man she's gone round the bend and is smokin something.... Not at all. It's just that because I love music so much, I like for it to have meaning and say something to me. For instance, I'm not much on country music, however, I do like the Dixie Chicks. One song in particular sticks out in my mind- "Travelin Soldier" It speaks to me- it starts off saying- "Two days past 18, he was waiting for a bus in his Army greens... it goes on to sing about how he befriends the waitress who is a pretty little girl with a bow in her hair, so he asks her if he can send letters to her because he has nobody else to write to when he goes off to Vietnam. She waits for his letters everyday and she falls in love with him and she becomes involved emotionally in what he's doing there and where he's traveling to, and when the letters just stop, she's the only one who cares and we are pulled into that emotion as we realize he's never coming home. The music leave us with the reflection of what it was like for all the soldiers who never came back from Nam. They are awesome to evoke that kind of imagery and feeling within the listener. Wyonna Judd does an excellent job as well in her song- "Flies on the Butter" It pleases the senses and takes you there so you see it in your mind. I love all of Sarah McLachlan's music, but particular ones that touch my inner being are "Possession", "Mary", "Good Enough", and "Hold On". In Good Enough, Sarah sings "I never would have opened up, but you seemed so real to me, after all the bullshit i've heard, it's refreshing not to see. I don't have to pretend, she doesn't expect it from me." I mean how awesome is that! She goes on with the second verse- "Hey little girl would you like some candy? Your momma said it's ok..the door is open come on outside. No, i can't come out today. It's not the wind that cracked your shoulder and threw you to the ground. Who's there that makes you so afraid? you're shaken to the bone. You know i don't understand, you deserve so much more than this." That line provokes an image and you want to know the little girl is going to be okay because she does deserve better than that.
I use music alot of times when I am painting or creating my artwork. I like peaceful meditative music or music that floats in my ears and creates a feeling within me. Dean Evanson is one of my favorite performers for having the ability to do that for me- Two CDs you should try if you are not familiar with his music are "Desert Moon Song" and "Wind Dancer". I highly recommend them. Most of that type of music is considered New Age and if you've never tried it, give it a whirl because you might just find you like it. One really great way to try it out before you buy it, is to go to your public library- they usually have a new age section and you can test it to see if it's your cup of tea.
I've been listening this past week to a new CD I got called Celestial Journey which has 11 different artist on there. It is music for the soul. Gabrielle Roth is outstanding on there and I like his music anyway because it is so different and unique. I love listening to his CDs in the truck as I am driving or listening to it with earphones on so I get the full effect of it. His music has a tendency to jump from speaker to speaker which is an awesome effect and a sensory pleasure to experience. I would recommend his CD called "Bones" if you want to try him out.
Of course I have mentioned before that I like beautiful piano music as well that is reflective and pleasing to the soul. Jim Brickman and David Lanz are my favorites.
If you want something truly different and unique try a Native American CD from Douglas Spotted Eagle called "Pray". I use it to meditate mostly and to connect with my native spirituality. One song on there I love is called "Breathe" that is excellent for getting lost in as you close your eyes and breathe in the experience of it.
Of course I still love my classics in rock and dance music. I still like to shake my groove thang and get down. I'll just mention a few of my favorites- Rolling Stones, Josh Stone, Annie Lennox, Missy Elliot, Norah Jones, Tina Turner, Creed, AC/DC, Pink Flyod, Eagles, Evanescence, Eminem (Betcha didn't think I was a rapper too, huh? -Actually I'm quite versatile, as I like classical too.)
Anyway, I guess that's all I wanna say about music, except that I enjoy it and love being taken on a journey by it. It is like a feast for the ears.... Now go listen to some music and tell me about it!

Okay bloggers! Here's the last set of questions I am posting- if you want more you can go out and buy the book...cause it is pretty interesting and is great for group discussions...
1. For $100,000 would you go for three months without washing, brushing your teeth or using deodorant? Assume you could not explain your actions to anyone.
2. Which of the following restrictions could you best tolerate: Leaving the country permanently, or never leaving the state in which you now live?
3. You become romantically involved with someone, but after six months you realize you need to end the relationship. If you were certain the person would commit suicide if you were to leave them and were also certain you could never be happy staying with them, what would you do?
4. If you knew your child would be severely retarded and would die at age five, would you decide to have an abortion?
5. If you went to a beach and it turned out to be a nude beach, would you stay and go swimming? Would you also go nude?
6. Would you accept $10.000 to shave your head bald and continue your normal activities without explaining your new haircut? (No cheating with a wig, scarf or hat...)
7. If you were at a friend's house for Thanksgiving dinner and found a dead cockroach in your salad, what would you do?
8. On a busy street you are approached by a well dressed stranger who asks for a dollar to catch the bus and make a phone call. He says he has lost his wallet. What would you do? If approached in the same way by a haggard dirty looking stranger claiming to be hungry and out of a job, what would you do?
9. Would you be willing to give up sex for five years if you could have wonderfully sensual erotic dreams any night you wished?
10. If you could take a one month trip to anywhere in the world and money were not a consideration, where would you go and what would you do?
Well, I hope you enjoyed these little thought provoking questions, I know I did and it is always interesting to me to see how other people answer. It's intriguing to see the mindset of others and how they may offer other viewpoints or provoke your own thinking even more.
Thanks for participating! PolarB ;)
